Singer Rene Marie stirred up a whole pot of controversy in Denver when she decided to sang The Black National Anthem, Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing, in place of the Star Spangled Banner. When asked why she choose to sang the song this is what Ms. Marie had to say:
"When I decided to sing my version, what was going on in my head was: 'I want to express how I feel about living in the United States, as a black woman, as a black person,'" said Marie. (Source)
I'm pretty sure it's only a matter of time before some people of the other persuasion find a way to use this against Barack Obama. I'm sure it will play into their fear of what may happen if a black person becomes President.
I admire Ms. Marie's courage to do what she believes in; howevere, I don't completely agree with what she did. She was asked to do a job and therefore she should have done the job that she was asked to do; doing something else looks deceitful on her behalf. No matter her intentions, she still deceived the mayor of Denver, who trusted her enough to ask her to perform, and that is most unfortunate.

Do you think it was a good idea for her to do this?
I admire her courage because it takes a real courageous person to do what she did, but I don't agree with what she did for the simple fact she was asked to do something and she did not fulfill what she was asked to do. I'm all for making political statements, but you shouldn't violate people's trust in the process. What she did was not only a reflection upon her, but also on the mayor of Denver. She could have handled it much better. I love the National Black Anthem. We sang it at all the events for my alma mater (FAMU), but we also sang the Star Spangle Banner.
Hey, we sang it down at Southern University Baton Rouge and during our elementary and middle school years. This just wasn't the right venue for her to do this.
