"If you can control a man's thinking,
you don't have to worry about his
actions. If you can determine what a
man thinks, you do not have to worry
about what he will do. If you can
make a man believe that he is inferior,
you don't have to compel him to seek
an inferior status, he will do so
without being told and if you can
make a man believe that he is justly
an outcast, you don't have to order
him to the back door, he will go to the
back door on his own and if there is
no back door, the very nature of the
man will demand that you build one."`

A few weeks ago I read an article in either the Detroit News or Detroit Free Press questioning folks on both sides of 8 mile on Sen. Obama, race, and the presidential race. I was saddened when the writer interviewed an 82-year-old Black man who felt that now is not the time for a Black president in the U.S. "Maybe in 100 years", was his response, but no rationale was given.
Perhaps and hopefully his outlook on the ability of Blacks to perform in not just leadership positions but in any task they are handed is one that is in the minority, but it proves this quotation to be true. He has been told for so long that Blacks are inferior in thought and deed that he does not believe that a Black man with an envious education and grasp of important issues is able to lead this country, when White men of lesser pedigrees have effectively run our great nation straight into the ground. To me, this emphasizes the importance of instilling in our children and loved ones a strong sense of high self-esteem and self-worth, so that we will never doubt our abilities to excel at anything.
