Chivalry is defined in the dictionary as:
1. The qualities idealized by knighthood, such as bravery, courtesy, honor, and gallantry toward women.
2. A manifestation of any of these qualities.
When I saw the above picture of the Obamas the first word that came to mind was chivalry. As a modern day woman I must admit that I haven't encountered a lot of chivalrous men (go figure). There have been a few along the way but they've always been older gentlemen. I don't know of too many men my age that I could consider chivalrous. Maybe it has something to do with the generation that I am apart of, but male/female relationships of this generation seem to be much different than that of my mother's or even my grandmother's generation. Maybe it's just me, but when a brother holds a door open for me or comes to my side of the car to open the door I am always taken a back. It's just not the type of behavior I expect from brother's these days (I know poor me, but I'm just keeping it real). Hell, I've read about chivalry and even heard some sistas talk about it, but never once did I think I would actually experience it. I mean really, do any sistas these days really expect to encounter a chivalrous brother? I for one believe the art of chivalry is dead. I think it has a way of manifesting itself here and there, but the full artform is a thing of the past. I can't say what happen although I have my opinion, but I would love to hear what you think about this topic.
Is chivalry dead? Will having the Obamas in the White House renew interest in the art of Chivalry? What Say Thee...
